Hiring a Comedy Stage Magician, The Real Secrets – Honesty From a Dishonest Profession
With years of experience as an international comedy stage magician in Brisbane and England, I am going to tip you the real secrets of hiring a high quality magician for your event, and how to avoid the low quality magicians that could actually do more damage than good to your event.
Simple Magicians jargon, the three main types of magicians that entertain your clients and guests in three very distinct ways.
1. A magician that performs card tricks, coin tricks and smaller tricks, ’street magic’ style, up close, either around tables, or in a drinks reception/mingling environment is called a Close Up Magician, Table Magician, Strolling Magician or even a Street Magician. These magicians are best for getting corporate clients or wedding guests to interact with each other. This type of magic is best for ice breakers at large dinner functions.
2. A magician that performs magic on a stage or in a parlour environment is simply known as a Stage Magician, Parlour Magician or Cabaret Magician. This is best used as a centre piece as it were for a function. Where the guests will sit back in their seats to be entertained. A lot of stage magicians use members of the audience for certain routines. When doing this at corporate functions it creates a lot of laughs and high energy in the room which , in turn, reflects on your party,
3. A magician that performs mind reading or ‘Derren Brown Style Magic’ is known as a Mind Reader, Mind-reader, Psychological Illusionist or Mentalist. These magicians are best for corporate functions. The energy is more amazement that amusement. It is regarded as a classier style of magic.
Firstly, decide which magician you are looking for and also what type of budget you have at your disposal.
The most important aspect to look for in a magician is the personality of the magician. There are hundreds of extremely technically talented magicians that struggle to perform. The most important function for a magician to execute is to entertain. Therefore, listening to word of mouth is always a good sign of whether a magician is worth their value.
All magicians will say words such as “amazing” and “unbelievable magic”. The best way to sort out the wheat from the chaff is to see if they have a video of their performance.
Magicians that say they have a kids party magic show and a mentalism show and a comedy show all on one very homemade looking website are to be avoided. Look for a magician that only does the field of magic that your require. Look at the photos. Have they invested time into hiring a professional photographer? Are they represented across other agency websites. Through looking at these somewhat insignificant clues you will be able to deduce which magicians are hobbyists promising you the earth and which are supporting themselves with their professional performances.

Goodbye, Africa… $17.95 Raymond Spenser was born in 1940s South Africa, when it was forbidden to treat a Black citizen as an equal member of society. This intolerance sets the stage for Raymond’s enlightening and inspiring global adventure. As a child, Raymond had extraordinary dreams: to become a magician, actor, and director. In addition, he aspired to experience the “real Africa.” After several decades of traveling through Southern Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia, Raymond achieves his professional goal: TV production in Johannesburg.Racial politics impels Raymond and his family to reach the Australian safe haven of Canberra. In the 1980s, Raymond moves with his wife and two sons to Zimbabwe, where he works as a producer and teacher, and becomes deeply involved in the local community. But soon, Raymond sees the inevitable writing on the wall. It is time to say, “Goodbye” to Africa.Author Desmond Bishop writes because he wants to engage the world around him. He started writing educational documentaries for the ABC in Sydney, in 1975. Desmond has worked as a producer and a teacher. His next book, The Wizard of Zee, tells the story of a boy who meets a wizard who teaches him to believe in himself. Desmond grew up in British colonial Southern Africa. Although he now resides in Asia, he enjoys travelling back to Nimbin, Australia, where he has a deep connection to the community.Publisher’s website: http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/GoodbyeAfrica.html |

How the Nagas Were Pleased by Harsha & The Shattered Thighs by Bhasa $22 Two tragic plays that break the rules: both show the hero dying on stage, a scenario forbidden in Sanskrit dramaturgy. King Harsha's play, composed in the seventh century, re-examines the Buddhist tale of a magician prince who makes the ultimate sacrifice to save a hostage snake (naga). The Shattered Thighs, attributed to Bhasa, the illustrious predecessor to ancient Kali·dasa, transforms a crucial episode of the Maha·bhárata war. As he dies from a foul blow to the legs delivered in his duel with Bhima, Dury–dhana's character is inverted, depicted as a noble and gracious exemplar amidst the wreckage of the fearsome battle scene. |

1909 Introductions $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Rider-Waite tarot deck is the most popular Tarot deck in use today in the English-speaking world (The Tarot de Marseille being the most popular deck in Latin countries). Other suggested names for this include the Rider-Waite-Smith, Waite-Smith, Waite-Colman Smith or simply the Rider deck. The cards were drawn by illustrator Pamela Colman Smith from the instructions of academic and mystic A. E. Waite, and published by the Rider Company. While the images are deceptively simple, almost child-like, the details and backgrounds hold a wealth of symbolism. The subjects remain close to the earliest decks, but usually have added details. Significantly, Waite had the Christian imagery of older tarot decks’ cards toned downthe “Pope” card became the “Hierophant”, the “Papess” became the “High Priestess”. The Minor Arcana are also, as in the earlier Sola Busca Tarot, fully illustrated with designs created by Smith. The chief aesthetic objection to this deck is the crude printing of colours in the original: several decks, such as the Universal Waite deck, simply copy the Smith line drawings, but with more sophisticated coloring. Pamela Colman Smith Arthur Edward WaiteThe cards were originally published in December 1909. The symbols used were influenced by the 19th century magician and occultist Eliphas Levi. In 1910, The Key to the Tarot by A.E. Waite was published, providing an overview of the traditions and history behind the cards, criticism of various interpretations, and extensive descriptions of their symbols. In 1911, a revised version, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot was published featuring 78 black and white plates of each card in the deck. U.S. Games currently claims copyright on the cards, although the actual copyright may only be valid on c… More: |

It was directed by Wallace Worsley and is based on Barry Pain ’s 1897 novel, The Octave of Claudius . It is considered a lost film . Critical response for the film was good, most praising Lon Chaney’s dual performance as the mad doctor and his servant as being the highlight of the picture. Plot The film is a contemporary (1920s) picture that takes place in New York City . The story involves a mad scientist who turns circumstances on a young man to do his bidding. Robert Sandell (Raymond McKee ), despondent over his ill luck as a writer, and his mother’s declining health, attacks and attempts to rob a theatergoer, Dr. Lamb (Lon Chaney Sr. ), a sinister, fanatical physician living in the suburbs of New York. Lamb takes the boy to his home, learns his story, and agrees to perform an operation on Mrs. Sandell (Virginia True Boardman ) on one consideration – that Robert shall at the end of eight days, deliver himself to the doctor to do with as he will, for experimental purposes. Frantic with worry over his dying mother’s condition, Robert agrees. |

7th Voyage of Sinbad $19.99 Whilst Sinbad (Kerwin Mathews) is on his way to Baghdad, transporting the Princess Parisa (Kathryn Grant), who is to become his bride and secure peace between her kingdom and his, the ship encounters the isle of Colossa. Sinbad and his men are attacked by a gigantic, bestial one-eyed Cyclops, and are saved only when the mysterious magician Sokurah (Torin Thatcher) appears and uses a magic lamp to protect Sinbad’s men. But in the process of escaping harm, Sokurah loses the lamp to the Cyclops. He desperately wants to retrieve it and tries to persuade Sinbad to put about and return to Colossa — but the captain won’t jeopardize the safety of the princess or the success of his mission, and the Caliph of Baghdad (Alec Mango) feels the same way, even after Sokurah amazes the court by conjuring up a snake-woman. It is only when the princess is shrunk by an evil spell, the breaking of which requires the shell from the egg of the giant Roc — which resides on Colossa — that Sokurah can get his expedition mounted, with Sinbad in command. With a crew made up of a handful of his bravest men and some of the most desperate convicts in the Caliph’s prison, he has to contend with potential mutiny at every turn, and the men are driven almost to madness before they even reach Colossa. Once there, they find terrors as great as the Cyclops and the treachery of the magician, but Parisa — in her tiny state — also discovers the beautiful world inside the lamp, and the lonely boy genie (Richard Eyer) who inhabits it. They strike the bargain that, when Sinbad’s bravery is added to the equation, will bring their quest to an end. If, that is, they can all survive the dangers that Sokurah puts in their path. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi |
